As building work on the new Morrisons store in Ilkeston nears completion, Erewash MP Jessica Lee was invited for a sneak peek of the new store.

It has been announced that the new superstore being built on Nottingham Road in Ilkeston will open after Christmas, with a date in January yet to be confirmed.

Developers Bowmer and Kirkland have almost finished construction and are preparing to hand the building over to Morrisons on December 12.

Morrisons will then decorate the interior of the store and stock it with their products.

The company invited Jessica Lee for a visit so that she could see the progress they had made and for a walk round the site and she said she was delighted to have been invited.

She added: “It has been a long time coming and has not been without its fair share of problems along the way but it was great to see how well the building works were going.

“It will be employing close to 200 people locally which is really good news for Ilkeston.”

Bowner and Kirkland were granted planning permission in October 2012 by Erewash Borough Council and building work began in January this year.

The store is being constructed on the old Derby College site between Field Road and Nottingham Road and the planning application also includes 39 new homes and a petrol station on the site.
