Students at an Ilkeston School are celebrating great results after taking part in a mini-tennis tournament.

Chaucer Junior School’s Year 5/6 Table Tennis Team produced some noteable performances during the competition, which was held at Kirk Hallam Community Academy.

Playing a round-robin contest against Cotmanhay Juniors, Hallam Fields Juniors and Shardlow Primary, the chosen team combined for a record of 20 wins from the 24 singles matches they played, with only four losses.

These results mean that Chaucer has won the Erewash North Schools competition and will move on to play in the Erewash final against Grange Primary School, who won the South Schools event.

The winner of that head-to-head match will proceed to the Derbyshire county finals.

Teaching assistant Graham Woodcock said: “A special mention goes to Katelyn Hanson, who came into the team with very late notice after an untimely withdrawal due to sickness. After only being asked to play just before lunch time, Katelyn had no hesitation stepping in to save the day and then went on to win all three of her matches! Superb attitude!

“Many thanks to Mrs Baggot for her with ping-pong preparation for the team and to Mrs Hopkins for assisting with transport. Thanks also to Hannah Gill and Erewash School Sports Partnership for a great feat of organisation, in getting through so many matches in so little time.”
