Help and information for people with lung disease is now on offer through Breathe Easy Ilkeston. MP Maggie Throup showed her support for the new group by sharing her own personal experiences of dealing with a lung condition — her mother suffered from pulmonary fibrosis — at an event on June 6. The respiratory information event at Ilkeston Football Club attracted more than 50 people with lung conditions and their carers. See right for more.
The respiratory information event at Ilkeston Football Club attracted more than 50 people with lung conditions and their carers.
The Breathe Easy Ilkeston group is part of the the British Lung Foundation (BLF) network and there are 230 groups across the country. The BLF is pleased to be working in partnership with Erewash Clinical Commissioning Group and the local respiratory services to establish new interest in the group to support wellbeing and self-management of respiratory illness through sharing experience with others and learning from experts.
The event on June 6 saw respiratory consultant Dr Mike Ward talk about breathlessness, as well as members from the team of the British Lung Foundation speaking about self management and the benefits of Breathe Easy.
Members of the local pulmonary rehabilitation group informed everyone how important and how beneficial pulmonary rehabilitation and exercise is. People met over a cup of tea with professionals from the respiratory teams and found out more about local support services with stalls from the Derbyshire Carers Association and local exercise instructors Breathe Easy Nottingham West. There were free refreshments and a prize draw of £50.
Following on from this event, Breathe Easy Ilkeston will meet at Nottingham Road Methodist Church, Nottingham Road, Ilkeston at 1.30pm on the third Wednesday of the month. The next meeting takes place on June 15 and will be a trip to Cromford Canal. On July 20, Sarah Gray from the BLF will be speaking. Anyone affected by any lung condition is welcome, including family members, friends and carers. Breathe Easy Ilkeston will be added to the network of Breathe Easy groups, joining successful groups up and running in Hucknall, Bulwell, Edwalton, Eastwood, Mansfield and Ollerton.
