A project is running to help keel water voles on the Erewash Canal safe.

Residents living near the Erewash Canal are being encouraged to support a project to increase the number of endangered water voles in the area.

Water vole populations have greatly declined in recent years due to the loss of their habitat.

Now the Canal and River Trust is asking people to back a project to reverse this trend.

The Erewash Canal has suffered from bank erosion and the Trust needs to raise money to enable coir rolls to be installed along it, softening the bank margins and creating valuable wildlife habitat.

Lucie Hoelmer, project manager, said: “This project is essential in protecting vital habitats on the Erewash Canal, bringing important species such as crayfish, damselflies and water voles into the heart of our towns and urban areas making them more attractive places for people to visit”.
