A taskforce has been launched to tackle the sale of fake cigarettes — and among its first tasks has been raids at several shops, including in Stapleford.
More than 90,000 illegal cigarettes with an estimated value of £40,000 were uncovered from nine seperate locations across Nottinghamshire. The haul is currently being investigated.
Nottinghamshire County Council is investing more than £90,000 of public health funding into investigators and trading standards officers to focus on reducing the supply of such counterfeit and untaxed products.
Chairman of the county council’s community safety committee, Cllr Glynn Gilfoyle, said: “We receive a great deal of information from local people on shops and individuals suspected of selling illicit tobacco which helps us target our enforcement work.”
