Ten reasons why it's good to be single this Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day is great for lovebirds who have a partner to share the romance with, but what about those who are on their own? If you are a singleton this year, have no fear. Instead of thinking of it as a day of "survival," embrace it as a time to love the most important person in your life- you.

Here we suggest ten ways to spend Valentine's Day as a singleton.

1) So you don't have a special someone to share a candlelit dinner with? Good, that means you can save money and have much more fun with your single friends!

Invite them over for a night of wine, movies and laughter. You could even share dating disaster stories, and take joy in the fact that you're not sitting in some fancy restaurant trying to impress someone.

2) Make it a day for loving and looking after yourself. Make yourself your favourite meal and do whatever you like, whether it be painting your nails, reading magazines or watching your favourite TV programs.

And be thankful that there's no one else there to demand your attention or change the TV channel!

3) Of course, being single means that you can still look for a certain special someone. There are plenty of singles events around this time of year, which are perfect for finding a new partner.

For example The Boundary in Derby has a Valentine's Dinner Party especially for singles this year (click here for details).

Or, you could grab a friend and go speed dating. You don't have to take it seriously, but who knows, you could end up meeting the person of your dreams! Click here and here to find out about more single events.

4) Don't have anyone to buy a present for this Valentine's Day? The natural solution is to treat yourself!

Buy yourself that pair of shoes or DVD you've had your eye on for the last couple of weeks, or brighten up your home with a big bunch of flowers.

5) If being single is making you feel blue, just remember those who have bigger problems such as the homeless and hungry.

Why not spend the day helping those less fortunate by volunteering at your local shelter, or participating in an event that raises money for charity.

6) Remember that being single is not the end of the world. Everyone has been there at some point and looking at some beautiful celebrities proves that.

Stars such as Cameron Diaz and Lindsay Lohan seem to be immensely enjoying the single life! They even go through heartbreak like us- just look at poor Lily Allen who is spending this Valentine's day as a singleton after being dumped by The Chemical Brothers' Ed Simmons.

7) If you are tired of being single, maybe it's time to freshen your look to get all eyes on you.

Book yourself into the hairdressers and try a different cut or colour. Then team your 'do with new makeup, clothes and a manicure.

If you look good, you'll feel good, and others will be attracted to your inner glow.

8) Do something that you could never do because of an ex.

Whether it's going to a club or restaurant that they never wanted to visit or watching a film they weren't interested in seeing, revel in the freedom of being your own person.

9) Be daring. That sexy stranger you see on the bus every day on the way to work? Say hello to him. Who knows where it might lead...

10) Remember that Valentine's day is about love, not lovers. So make it a time for letting your nearest and dearest know what they mean to you.

Send cards to old friends or relatives you haven't seen for a while. After all, it is these people who, unlike lovers, stay in your life forever.
