A man has appeared in court on a theft charge after a pensioner selling poppies had her handbag stolen.

Carl Reeve, 39, of no fixed abode, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. He was remanded in custody until a later date.

The 83-year-old woman had been selling poppies with her husband at the Co-op on South Street on Thursday October 30 when someone grabbed her handbag and ran off down the street.
