The trust in charge of newly merged academies in Ilkeston has been given the go-ahead to build a multi-million pound classroom block.

The former Bennerley School in Cotmanhay was closed by Ormiston and merged with Ormiston Ilkeston Academy because of falling numbers.

The new building will occupy 40 per cent of the school site and will see the demolition of the Cantelupe Building and temporary classrooms.

At an Erewash Borough Council planning committee meeting on Wednesday (July 24), councillors voted unanimously in favour of the scheme.

“The buildings which exist have been an eyesore for a number of years and are totally impractical for a school,” said Cllr David Morgan.

Before the controversial merger Orimston was granted £7.4m by the Government for the Cotmanhay site.

Most of that cash will now be used to create the new block, which includes 20 classrooms and state-of-the-art science labs.
