A Ilkeston-born designer has won a prestigious fashion award for her self-titled brand of clothing.

Fazane Malik scooped the Midlands Independent Designer of the Year 2013 for her working women collection at an awards ceremony in Birmingham last month.

Fazane, 30, worked in the industry for ten years before starting her label two years ago and left her job with a leading clothing manufacturer a year ago to concentrate on it fully.

Fazane said: “I am very honoured to have won this award in the face of such tough competition. I have long been a champion of the amazing talent on offer here in the Midlands.”

Jenny Eason, founder of the MFA awards, said: “Fazane was a very deserving winner. Her designs were amazing.”

Fazane, who has a design studio in Heanor, said: “I have plans to expand. I am in my first year but we are getting bigger and we are getting more business. We are hoping to take more people on.”
