A LONG Eaton-based barbershop choir is celebrating this week after scooping a bronze medal in a national singing competition.

The Grand Central Chorus, which has members from all over the East Midlands faced stiff competition from 33 choirs from across the UK at the National Barbershop Convention in Llandudno.

They were also awarded the Most Improved Chorus Award.

Lead singer Brian Sargent said: “We were gobsmacked

“We had been working hard since last year and knew there was improvement, but this was completely unexpected.”

The group sang In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning a ballad made famous by Frank Sinatra and up tempo Original Dixieland One Step, a fast and furious number which tested the stamina of some of the older members.

The chorus has been around since 1991 and rehearses every Wednesday evening at Harrington School.
