Top traders' celebrations

Traders in Ilkeston and Long Eaton are celebrating after being voted top of the shops in this year's Good Town Trader Awards.

Shoppers filled out hundreds of voting forms to vote for their favourite shops, market stalls, cafs and pubs in the two towns.

Among the ten categories were best customer service and cleanest shop front, with winners receiving a trophy and certificate in ten categories, including.

Some traders scooped awards for the fourth year running – Ilkeston florist Buds n' Blooms has won best window display for the four years the awards have been running.

Buds n' Blooms owner Lynne Thomson, who took over the South Street business five years ago, said: "It's nice to be recognised. It's good to know that shoppers notice the hard work that we constantly put into our window displays with changing themes and seasons."

"I suspect our Christmas displays earn us some votes because we particularly put an emphasis on attracting the children."

Over in Long Eaton, Pete's Upper Crust Caf in High Street has won the award for best caf for the second successive year.

Pete Thein took over the business three years ago and is pleased with his back-to-back success.

He said: "We have built up a good trade now, even in the recession. Our customers are quite loyal."

The ten traders from Ilkeston and ten from Long Eaton were presented with trophies by Mayor of Erewash Cllr Terry Holbrook and market towns co-ordinator Paul Calladine at separate ceremonies in the Erewash Partnership Offices in Wharncliffe Road, Ilkeston, on Friday February 19 and at Long Eaton Town Hall on Friday February 26.

Paul said: "These awards matter because they are decided on votes by shoppers themselves, the people who regularly visit these places and spend their money there."

The awards are organised by enterprise agency Erewash Partnership and aims to highlight shopping locally.
