Traders’ battle call over cash

Ahead of the news that some of a £250,000 pot of cash put aside for Ilkeston town centre will be spent on two hours of free parking, Bath Street traders said they would ‘go into battle’ with the council if it fails to act.

The Ilkeston Independent Traders Group met on May 22 when it was decided that they would write a letter to leader of the council, Cllr Chris Corbett, requesting a meeting with the whole council.

Members said they feel they do not get enough support from the council and, at the time, had not received an update on what progress had been made about the cash.

Chairman David Vipond said: “We’ve got to co-operate with the council, help them and work together.

“We will base it on ‘we have come up with ideas, you have chosen to do nothing’ – we are going into battle if you’re not prepared to work with us.

“The council have now got to stand up and be counted. If they don’t we will shame them.”

Munur Ceyhan, known as Chico, owner of All Things Nice cafe, said: “I know Ilkeston people love this town but we have to say to them ‘fight for your town’.”
