Passions were running high at a meeting of Bath Street traders and Erewash councillors last week as they discussed the town centre’s problems.
Most businesses cited the biggest barriers to increasing trade in Ilkeston as the lack of free car parking and expensive rents and rates.
One trader said: “Free car parking to me is a good idea, but it’s in the wrong place.
“The majority of shoppers are elderly – it should be in the middle of town.”
Some of the traders have now formed a committee which will meet regularly – starting on Wednesday next week at All Things Nice cafe – to propose ideas to improve our struggling high street.
Chairman David Vipond, of Dyl and Co fancy dress store, said the group would create between five and 10 suggestions for improving the town centre at each meeting and then present them to councillors.
Erewash Borough Council leader Cllr Chris Corbett said he would listen to all suggestions made by traders.
