A former Erewash Mayor, who died this week has been described by a former colleague as ‘a pleasure to be with’.
Former Labour group leader on Erewash Borough Council, Peter Jeffery, of Cotmanhay, had also worked as a firefighter.
Labour councillor for Long Eaton and Mr Jeffery’s former colleague Cllr Howard Griffiths led tributes this week, saying he ‘will be much missed’.
“He was an amiable, honest and dignified man who was a credit to the borough, the fire service and his family,” said Cllr Griffiths.
“He was always a pleasure to be with.
“I sympathise with his family’s loss, particularly his wife Jean, who was always the rock in his life.”
Tory leader of the council Cllr Chris Corbett said Mr Jeffery was ‘a gentleman who did a fine job during his term of office as Mayor of Erewash’.
And Labour group chairman Helen Clarke said he was a ‘credit to the Labour movement’.
Mr Jeffery, 78, of Duke Street, served as Mayor from 1996 to 1997.
