A new Ilkeston roundabout could be ‘gnome’ by a special name following a fun campaign.

Members of Erewash Borough Council’s planning committee meet next week and have the chance to agree that the Nottingham Road roundabout will be known as Gnome Island following an epetition signed by 520 people.

The traffic island has been a major talking point in the town and captured the imagination of people when gnomes started to appear on the roundabout.

A fun campaign has seen the Ilson Gnome launch a popular Facebook ‘gnome-page’.Councillor Geoffrey Smith, said: “This is certainly a case of ‘there’s no place like gnome’ and the official naming of this new island is definitely ‘gnome’ joke.

“I’m sure this will be one of the more light-hearted items that we have to discuss.”
