The outstanding achievements of nineteen gifted young people from the ilkeston area have been recognised at the 14th Derbyshire Young Achiever Awards.

The awards were set up to highlight some of the outstanding personal achievements of young people across the county and were handed out by Strictly star Robbie Savage during a ceremony in Matlock last Friday.

And around 550 guests and nominators joined them for the celebration in which each young person was nominated for bravery, kindness in helping others, commitment to improving their school, community or local environment and sporting, musical, artistic or academic success.

Guests were welcomed to the celebrations with a speech from Derbyshire County Council Leader Councillor Andrew Lewer and the evening was compered by Barry Jarvis and Laura Pennington from High Peak Radio.

Cllr Lewer said: “We know that young people have a lot to give.

“The majority of young people are doing good things in our schools, homes and communities. Unfortunately we do not get to hear enough about them - which is why we think it is important to recognise the outstanding achievements of these incredible young people.”
