A BIG last round by Jamie Williams landed him his first ever Midland Counties title in the Junior ABA finals in Coventry last weekend.
Jamie faced a tough test from Parmdeep Khaira of the Priory Park Club in Dudley, but matched him all the way in the first two rounds before running away with it in the last.

Khaira came forward throwing heavy punches and Williams elected to trade with him catching his opponent with similar heavy punches as he came in, but Khaira got through with enough to keep the scores level on the computer-scored contest, 3-3 after round one and 6-6 after the second round.

That would be Khaira’s last scoring though as Jamie decided to use his skilful movement in the last and punch and move as he won the round 5-0 to take the contest 11-6.

Khaira still came forward but Williams used this momentum to bang in solid punches and use clever evasive movement as he produced quality boxing.

Trinity coach Scott Rafferty said: “Jamie boxed well, especially when he started to move.

“He has worked hard to get this title and now he is a champion. His effort and dedication really deserve this.”

Jamie will box next in the national quarter-final in Barnsley on May 17.

His opponent will be Joe Paten of the Hull Saints Boxing Club, who is the Yorkshire and Humberside champion.

Ilkeston boxing fans will get a chance to see Trinity boxers in action again on May 18 on a Sunday afternoon tournament promoted by the Derbyshire ABA at the Festival Inn, Trowell.

The Derbyshire ABA team, which features several Trinity boxers, will face a team from North Wales in a team match.

There will also be support bouts featuring Trinity boxers. Action starts at 2pm..
