TRINITY ABC boxers have been busy in the gym this month as they prepare for their challenges in 2012.

January and February are often slow months for boxing following the Christmas break and the start of the schoolboy championships, but Trinity’s members have been working hard on their fitness and skills.

None more so than lightweight Thomas Robinson, who as taken the Boxer of the Month award for January after an intensive month of training culminating with an outstanding performance in Sheffield last week.

Although the Trinity star missed out on the decision, he impressed in his first bout over the elite Olympic distance of 3 x 3 minute rounds on the Unity Club tournament against home town lad Michael Hunter.

Robinson, 17, stayed with his opponent throughout and put together solid punches to stun the advancing Yorkshireman in the final round.

Many ringside observers thought the Trinity man had done enough but, regardless of the decision, the fight was a fantastic spectacle and a massive leap for Robinson as he continues to progress.

Trinity club leader Scott Rafferty said: “Thomas continues to make remarkable progress and despite some close decisions going against him he never complains, he just gets back down to training and improving.

“He is a very determined lad and a credit to the club. He really does deserve the Boxer of the Month award and I hope this will inspire him to carry on moving forward.”

Pride Park

Robinson is now ranked in the top four lightweights in the county and gets a chance to impress again and earn a Derbyshire challenge belt shot when he fights Chesterfield’s Danny Hewitt in an eliminator on Friday’s challenge night at Derby’s Pride Park Stadium.

Also on the Pride Park bill will be flyweight Jamie Williams who makes a challenge for the bantamweight belt.

Williams has been working hard and will be determined to reverse an earlier defeat by Derby’s Conar Blackshaw.

Also on the bill in support bouts to the seven challenge belt fights will be schoolboy Loui Hemstock and middleweight Zak Smedley, who will be looking to continue the good form he showed in his debut win when he takes on Dominic Mathews of Ripley.

On the same night, Trinity’s ABA hopefuls will weigh in for the county round of the ABA Elite Senior Championships.

Former novice national champion Russell Henshaw will enter at heavyweight and along with super heavyweight Jake Harrison will set out on journey they have been preparing for since the start of the season.

Harrison had his first taste of open class boxing last week when he faced Jack Radford of Barnsley over the 3 x 3 minute duration.

Again the Yorkshireman was awarded the close split decision, but Harrison grew as the bout progressed and the experience will be invaluable as he prepares to meet the best in the Midlands.

Ilkeston boxing fans will get a chance to see the local talent on show when Trinity promote at the Festival Inn, Trowell on Friday, March 16.

Tickets are now on sale and can be ordered by contacting Scott Rafferty on 079 56 56 55 82 or by email at scottrafferty@live.co.uk.
