Junior boxing star John Langley produced an explosive finish in Sheffield to continue the good form of Trinity ABC boxers this season.

After two fairly even but entertaining rounds, Langley, 16, raised his game in the last to take a convincing victory over the promoting Aspire club’s Red Johnson.

Two big punches from the Trinity boxer forced the referee to step in and end the contest after only 30 seconds of the round, Langley having earlier forced a count following a strong left hook before ending the contest with a big right hand.

There was disappointment earlier in the week for schoolboy boxer Loui Hemstock when he exited the National Championships at the East Midland semi-final stage.

Hemstock faced Christagie Charalambous of Nottingham club St. George in Derby after having to move up to a higher weight category, and despite a brave challenge his opponent’s extra strength was the deciding factor.

This week sees the club’s senior stars move into championship action.

The senior ABA Elite Championships begin in Northampton on Saturday and this year Trinity have a strong entry, with four boxers heading to the Royal Dern Gate centre for the East Midland Championships after a rigorous training programme .

Jake Harrison, 22, who won the national novice championship in December, will be entering his first open class competition, while Russ Henshaw and Jamie Williams will be in the championship for the second year running.

Alex Reed, 25, will make his championship debut at middleweight.
