Some of Erewash’s most talented athletes have received a welcome share of £1,725 thanks to Derbyshire Sport’s ICON bursary programme.

The chosen 10 athletes from across the Borough will receive up to a maximum of £250, which helps meet travel, equipment, coaching and competition costs.

Erewash Borough Council will also provide a membership package to use its four sites (gym, swim and classes) for those aged 14 and over and a swim membership for those U14.

All are tipped for further success in their respective sports, and are either already competing internationally, have won a national championship medal, are part of a recognised national development squad or are on the Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS) programme.

Coun Mike Wallis, lead member for culture and leisure at Erewash Borough Council, said: “We really pack a punch in Erewash when it comes to unearthing sports stars of the future, and it’s great that we are able to give them a helping hand on that journey.

“They all work very hard – as do their parents, teachers, coaches and club officials in supporting them. We’re proud of their achievements so far and look forward to hearing about more successes in the future.”

Erewash Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council are among 10 local authorities across the county who are business members of ICON, which was set up by Derbyshire Sport as part of the work to create a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Games in Derbyshire.
