Easy win for the Millers
Langley Mill (D Lacey 49, G Ball 47) 131-2 (16 points] beat Chesterfield Barbarians (J Denby 59) 129-7 (1 point] by 8 wickets
LANGLEY Mill fielded a strong side for their opening game of the 2009 campaign and raced to an easy victory over Mansfield League newcomers Chesterfield Barbarians at Station Road last Sunday.
Wicketkeeper Craig Parker, returning from an injury which kept him out of the final games of 2008, took three catches and a stumping, while openers Dan Lacey and Grant Ball put on 96 for the first wicket, which helped the Millers to a 16 point success.
Skipper Andrew Bailey won the toss and surprisingly asked the visitors to take first knock on a damp, green track.
The young Barbarians were no match for the Millers opening attack of Jack Scott and Jamie Salmons as they slumped to 24 for 3.
The experienced Jon Denby withstood the Millers' onslaught for a patient 59, but Steve Vine was the only other Chesterfield player to reach double figures as he posted a defiant unbeaten 27.
Scott picked up two wickets at a cost of 14, and Scott Parkin grabbed a couple for 39.
There was a wicket apiece for Bailey, Salmons and Aaron Tullett as the Barbarians crumpled to 129 for 7 from their 40 overs.
The Millers used nine bowlers as everyone was given the opportunity to loosen up in time for the start of the Derbyshire County League at the end of the month.
Lacey and Ball wasted no time in chasing down the Barbarians effort, but both fell within sight of their fifties. Ball was first to go, gloving one to keeper Vine, off Alan Slack for 47 and Lacey was bowled by Robert Hepworth for 49. Jay Holmes (15 not out) and Nick Wright (10 not out) saw the hosts safely home after only 23.5 overs.
This Sunday, Langley Mill make a first ever visit to Eckington, on the outskirts of Sheffield, for a Mansfield League fixture. The game starts at 1.30pm.
There is no game on Saturday.
