Stanton Elks CC
by Mark Cufflin
STANTON’S first XI enjoyed an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Spondon thirds on Saturday.
Spondon batted first and an opening partnership of over 50 between Steve Baker (39) and Joe Searcy (22) laid the foundations for a decent total.
However, a tight spell of bowing from Chris Marshall with 4-15 from his 14 overs kept Spondon’s batsmen under control, and only a few lusty blows towards the end of the innings by Lee Fox (31*) and Kev Bunting (33) took Spondon to a total of 191 for 6.
The Elks batsmen set off at a good rate in reply but lost opener Richard Barnes in only the third over.
A turning point came in the sixth over when Fox had Scott Law dropped three times, who then batted through the innings to remain undefeated on 97, well assisted by Matt Winfield (45) and Tom Windley (46) as the Elks finished on 197-3.
l The second XI entertained Derby Congs and put the visitors into bat first.
Veteran opening bowler Barrie James enjoyed a fine spell of bowling, taking 4 for 30, well supported by captain Neil Sanderson who took 4 for 33 as the visitors were dismissed for just 96 in 24 overs.
The Elks reached their target in just 21 overs, Mark Aldred with 23 and Ashley Goring contributing 35 not out.
