A GROUP of 14 athletes from Erewash have been given a £3,100 cash boost from Podium, a scheme which supports sports performers in their bid to reach the top.
The athletes have shared the bursary pot, receiving between £150 and £400 each to help them meet training-related costs.
They compete in a wide variety of sports from bowls and cycling to swimming and table tennis. Many of them already compete for England or Great Britain in their chosen sport, while others are part of a recognised national development squad or development squad aligned to a professional sports club.
The 14 athletes are: Helen Mason (bowls), Simon Skelton (bowls), Jo Skelton (bowls), Hannah Blount (cycling), Samuel Ward (fencing), Nick Newbold (golf), Thomas Soar (ice hockey), Will Weldon (ice hockey), Callum Bowley (ice hockey), Abby Green (ice skating), Anya Colley (jet skiing), Jess Sylvester (swimming), Emma Vickers (table tennis) and Marcus Walters (tennis).
Cllr Michael Wallis, lead member for culture and leisure at Erewash Borough Council, and Cllr Carol Hart, chairman of Derbyshire Sport, met the athletes to congratulate them during a presentation at Victoria Park Leisure Centre in Ilkeston.
Podium is backed by Derbyshire’s sport and business scheme ICON, with money raised from the scheme used to support local athletes through Podium. Members include Erewash Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council, together with more than 45 other local organisations.
In addition to the bursaries, Erewash Borough Council will provide each of the athletes with free access to their leisure centres.
Cllr Wallis said: “My congratulations go to all of the athletes, who have already achieved so much in their individual sports and continue to work hard.
“It is fantastic to see so much sporting talent in Erewash, and I am delighted that the council is able to continue to support local athletes in this way. I wish each of the athletes every success for the future as they continue to fly the flag for Erewash and Derbyshire.”
Athletes will use their bursaries to help meet training-related costs such as travel, equipment, coaching fees or competition costs.
Podium is managed by Derbyshire Sport and is financially supported by ICON.
