Erewash Valley Golf Club members Craig Parker and Ben Scott have finished third overall in the Howdidido Matchplay grand final held in Morocco.
The duo started out in the competition with over 600 pairs, qualifying for the regional final in Cheshire and subsequently the national final at the L’Amphitrite Palace Resort and Spa.
The competition is sponsored by Howdidido, a golfing website that runs the club handicaps system all over the UK.
The first day saw the pair play the Tony Jacklin course Casablanca which is a links style course that has only been open eight months. They came up against what Parker described as two ‘seasoned pros’ and halved the match.
The Tuesday match was at the Dar es Salaam Blue Course and where the duo put in their worst round of the week, losing to the eventual winners.
Wednesday’s match took place at the Dar es Salaam Red Course which is the main course and will host a European tour event in 2017. The course measures over 7,300 yards and although Parker and Scott started well by going two up early on, they eventually lost on the last.
On Thursday action returned to the Blue Course and having played it earlier in the week the duo knew what to expect. A quick start was needed and they went four up very early playing some good golf, eventually winning 3 and 2.
Friday’s encounter was back at the Red Course against two of the biggest hitters in the tournament. Parker and Scott saved their best round for the final day, going six up after eight holes and eventually winning two up.
Craig said: “Winning two-and-a-half points out of five was enough to finish third overall and having got to the regional finals last year and the grand final this year our target is to go on and become national champions next season.”
