Ilkeston FC 5 CV Reds 1
TEENAGE captain Matt Baker led his team to a fine win and elegantly outlined the ambitions of Kevin Wilson’s academy.
“We keep trying to get better and better and work hard at that. We are all striving to get into the first team,” said Baker, who has just turned 17.
He was utterly in command at the back as the Robins dominated this match. Only slack finishing kept the score within bounds. One effort ended up in the River Erewash.
While Wilson’s squad is young, Baker’s hopes for next season are realistic with many developing power to match their obvious skills.
They took the lead in the third minute when Ryan Wilson’s vicious corner swerved into the net. The manager’s son had already tested CV Reds with two awkward flag kicks.
In ten minutes, Ilkeston Michael Williams gloriously volleyed home a cross from the right. With Danny James prompting subtly from midfield, CV Reds were at full stretch due to some deadly crosses, several from Andrew Osei-Siribour.
But none were turned into goals until Josh Wisdom picked up a rebound and scored in the 61st minute. The Reds netted three minutes later when Callum Martin converted a low cross.
There was little chance of the visitors saving a point but Troy Carty had a point to prove. He jumped from the substitutes’ bench to score from close range in 86 minutes.
With a minute left, he rounded off a memorable night, lobbing keeper Malcolm Grace from the edge of the penalty area.
Baker declared it “an honour and a privilege” to skipper the side, after joining the Robins in the summer. He had been freed by hometown club Leicester City after three years and added:”I am really enjoying it here and glad the gaffer asked me to come down.”
Wilson felt frustrated at the missed openings but said:”We have a good mentality, we want to get it down and play. And at least we are creating chance after chance.”
