Ilkeston FC 3 Burton Albion 2

Ryan Wilson and Jack Watts both scored spectacular goals as Ilkeston FC beat a strong Burton Albion side 3-2 on Tuesday night.

It was an encouraging pre-season display from the Robins after what manager Kevin Wilson described as a ‘lacklustre’ performance against Notts County on Saturday, and on a warm night was a good test of fitness levels too.

Ilkeston came close in just the second minute, Watts’ drive parried away for a corner by Albion keeper Dean Lyness.

Zander Diamond then rattled the crossbar moments later for Burton following a free-kick floated in from the left-hand side, but the hosts would take the lead on nine minutes when Jimmy Phillips picked the ball up on the left-hand edge of the penalty area and curled a fine effort past Ashley Timms and into the net.

Adi Yussuf shot wide in a good position on 14, but the Robins were level three minutes later when a corner found its way back out to the taker, Watts, and he hammered in a shot from a narrow angle which Lyness could only parry into the net at his near post.

Phillips ended a good run with a shot wide on the half hour mark as the game settled into a more leisurely pace, but there was nothing leisurely about Ilkeston’s second goal on 35 minutes.

Wilson picked the ball up 30 yards out in plenty of space and hit a powerful strike into the top corner via a slight touch from Lyness to put his side in front going into the break.

Matt Richards flashed a shot wide early in the second-half for Ilkeston and Robbie Weir was similarly close for the visitors on 55.

Phillips was lively and saw a low drive blocked by Timms on the hour after a good run at the defence before then shooting wide moments later from a similar position.

Two goals in quick succession then followed.

First Brett Pearson levelled from six yards out after a fine run and cross by newly-arrived sub Jacques Maghoma on 64 minutes.

But two minutes later Watts cut inside from the right and hit a fabulous left-footed strike from 25 yards out which gave Lyness no chance.

The game settled down again until the end with neither side creating much amid a flurry of substitutions, and Ilkeston held on despite some late Burton pressure to seal a morale-boosting victory.
