FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round

AFC Fylde 1 Ilkeston FC 1

Dereece Gardner earned Ilkeston a second bite at the cherry with the equaliser which forced a Monday night replay at the New Manor Ground.

The draw was a fair result in the end and a good one for the Robins given Fylde’s form going into the game and with a home re-match resulting from it.

And yet it looked like it would be a long afternoon when the hosts took the lead just six minutes in.

Joe Booth did well to break into the penalty area on the left and his ball into the six-yard box wasn’t dealt with by goalkeeper or defenders, instead being turned in by Adam Farrell who didn’t seem to know all that much about it.

Farrell went close to scoring a second twice in the following minutes after each time being set up by Michael Barnes, before the Robins began to wake up and threaten the hosts’ goal, Gary Ricketts heading into the side netting and Joe Maguire’s long-range daisy-cutter being well held by keeper Ben Hinchliffe.

Booth had shots blocked and then saved for Fylde who were creating the better chances, though it was Ilkeston who came close to a leveller on the stroke of half-time.

Ricketts did well down the left before finding Watts on the edge of the area, and after his first effort was well saved by Hinchliffe, a glancing header when Dan Partridge crossed over the resultant loose ball went just wide of the post.

The second-half saw Ilkeston much more of a threat going forward whilst at the same time looking very secure at the back.

Gardner was inches away from a goal on 50 minutes when his low shot came back off a post and rebounded straight into the arms of a grateful Hinchliffe.

Maguire had another crack from distance test the Fylde stopper on 53 and James Reid produced some good skill before finding the side netting, but the goal would eventually come on 70 minutes.

Matt Richards found space out on the right hand side, and he curled a perfect left-footed cross onto head of Gardner who powered the ball into the net leaving Hinchliffe with no chance.

From then on Ilkeston looked most likely winners, Gardner firing too high after good work by Reid on 72 minutes.

The hosts still carried a threat, however, and Partridge had to be alert to head Glenn Steel’s effort off the line following a corner and Barnes fired too high when in a good position following Richie Allen’s cross.

But the score was to remain level and a second date at the New Manor Ground was secured.
