Shaun Goater hailed a debut victory as Ilkeston manager this afternoon and called for more of the same from his players as they battle against the drop.
The Robins earned their first win since October 22 thanks to Dexter Atkinson’s early goal and began Goater’s reign in the perfect fashion.
And although the match wasn’t a pretty one in terms of quality, it will matter little to Goater who paid tribute to his young squad.
He said: “I said to them that they have to remember this feeling of being shattered at the end of a game but it being one they’ve taken a win from, as you don’t win games without having put in that kind of effort.
“I hadn’t had long to work with the players but everyone did what was asked of them. Now it’s about producing that kind of effort in all of the remaining games as we’ll need to.”
Key for Goater now is continuing the momentum when Ilkeston host Hednesford Town on Tuesday night, aiming to make it three games unbeaten as they try and claw their way towards safety.
He added: “Today is a great feeling but it starts again at 0-0 on Tuesday and we have to work hard between now and then.
“There were some issues with our decision making today which we’ll need to address as once or twice we chose the wrong options but overall I’m delighted to have got a win.
“It remains the case that we need some more height in the team as it’s something we lack right now, but the players I have now showed me how much they want to be part of this team and that’s pleasing.”
