OPINION: Bent and Baird deserve new Derby deals in Rowett rebuild

Derby County go into their final league match of the season at Rotherham with yet another dismissal at the club.

Sam Rush the CEO was sacked for gross misconduct as speculation mounted in the days before the action was taken. It’s difficult to make any sort of comment about it without knowing the actual facts behind this.

On the field we visit a side that has been struggling all season and have been the whipping boys for most of it.

Hopefully we can end the season on a high note as we enter the summer break. I’m sure Gary Rowett will want nothing less than a win to round of our fixtures.

I’ve already stated the improvements that we need to our defence for next season and already speculation had started about possible signings.

Andre Wisdom has been linked with a possible £4m move. Wisdom was a very popular loan signing during our play off final season under McClaren. Whether he would be prepared to play Championship football again is another matter.

A lot of eyes will be on George Thorne over the summer. Since his full transfer from West Bromwich he’s been very unlucky with injuries and missed nearly two full seasons.

No doubting his talent, but another bad knock might make the club think hard before offering him a new contract.

Amongst the players moving towards the exit door I would expect Nick Blackman, who’s time at the club has been less than impressive. Apart from not looking the part whilst playing, his lack of playing time this season due to injury has to have him down as a poor buy. Blackman was signed by Paul Clement and so was Abdoul Camara, who has also failed to make much of an impression.

Darren Bent and Chris Baird deserve their one year extensions in my opinion. Bent has been in and out of the side, but has still hit 13 goals. Chris Baird has looked comfortable wherever he’s played and has turned it around from last season whilst he was a target of the boo boys.

So there we go! We can all go off on our summer holidays and sit and wait for Gary Rowett to get the ball rolling in what promises to be a very interesting summer.
