Sub Matty Devine struck five minutes from time to give Marine a deserved victory over a disappointing Ilkeston side on Saturday.
The Robins barely deserved the point it seemed they had earned through James Reid’s equaliser on 74 minutes, but the visitors, who had worked hard over the 90 minutes and given the hosts little time on the ball, bounced back to steal the victory.
Ilkeston lacked ideas throughout, struggling to keep possession and crying out for some creativity in the final third.
Marine had the better openings in the first-half, Dean Astbury in particular a threat, although clear cut chances were few and far between.
Astbury twice, Ilkeston’s Jason Stokes and Reid and Marine’s Lee Parle all had efforts from distance either go wide or be gathered by the goalkeepers, until the deadline was broken five minutes before half-time.
Astbury received the ball 35 yards out and after beating Aaron Webster he then dinked the ball into the far corner past keeper Rob Peet from a fairly narrow angle.
In the previous two games, Ilkeston had produced a much better spectacle in the second-half and it was hoped a few choice words from manager Kevin Wilson might again get his players motivated, but if anything the second period was generally worse than the first for the home side.
Webster’s long rage effort on 62 minutes flashed justwide, before Astbury should have made it 2-0 moments later when an error at the back sent him one-on-one with Peet who was able to push away the Marine striker’s shot.
The home supporters were getting increasingly frustrated at the lack of invention being shown by their team, so it was something of a surprise to everyone when the Robins salvaged an equaliser.
Kane Richards played Reid in on goal just inside the penalty area, and despite keeper Callum Williams saving Reid’s first effort, the Robins man was able to scramble the ball home from the rebound.
Any hopes that might breathe some life into the hosts were unfounded.
Astbury should have scored again after cutting inside for a clear shot at goal and firing over, but it would be the man who then replaced him that would net the winner.
A ball over the top wasn’t dealt with by the defence, and Devine ran on to beat a last ditch challenge, go around Peet and finish with style from a narrow angle to spark huge celebrations from the visitors and seal Ilkeston’s fate after a bad day at the office.
