Frickley Athletic 2 Ilkeston FC 1

Ilkeston failed to capitalise on a dominant first-half at Frickley on Tuesday as two quickfire goals from Gavin Allott gave the hosts their first win of the season.

The Robins hit the frame of the goal four times in a match where luck wasn’t on their side, but they will have been disappointed to concede two sloppy goals that ultimately cost them the game.

For the opening 45 minutes gave little indication that Frickley would be much of a threat, aside from a shot wide by Allott on 13 minutes and a wayward volley by Jimmy Ghaichem right on half-time.

Between those opportunities Ilkeston controlled things entirely.

Will McCall shot straight at keeper Tom Woodhead on 22 minutes, then he set up Dan Partridge to hit the bar after Woodhead had fumbled a free-kick moments later.

Matt Richards hit a low shot which cannoned back off the post on the half-hour mark and after a fine counter-attack following a Frickley corner, Dion Chambers saw an effort tipped onto the post and wide.

But Ilkeston would have their reward on 40 minutes and it owed much to the persistence of Richards, as he won two tackles on the edge of the penalty area before waltzing inside it and finding the corner of the net with a low shot.

Ilkeston continued to threaten early in the second period, Jack Watts volleying wide and Daryll Thomas finding the keeper’s arms with a bicycle kick.

But then came the two goals in three minutes that would change the game. First a shot from Chris Wood was deflected into Allott’s path and he beat Timms with aplomb, and then a long hoof forward somehow found the same player and he drew Timms before sliding the ball home through his legs.

The Robins were stunned but kept plugging away as the match became a scrappy and bad-tempered affair.

Ryan Wilson hit the bar with a free-kick and five minutes from time Thomas put a volley from five yards out straight into Woodhead’s arms when six inches either side of him would have seen it find the net.

But Frickley would hold on for an unlikely victory and leave Ilkeston counting the cost of their profligacy once again.
