Freak goal seals defeat
Stanton Ilkeston U10 0 Belper Town Gold Sox 1
Stanton, playing their first game in weeks, produced their best display this season but fell to defeat at home to Belper.
The visitors, currently second in the league, were outplayed for most of the match with just one near-post save required from Stanton goalie James Boyle.
In midfield and defence, Stanton played as a tight unit with defender Joseph Corker at his best, covering Finlay Castle.
A sure-footed display by Corker enabled Castle to control the midfield area, dominating in the tackles and headed clearances.
Brandon Godsall, playing in defence for the first time, played his best game for the Ironmen with much-improved confidence, as did midfielder Jack Lipscombe who closed down his opponents very quickly, thus denying them room to attack.
In midfield, Cory Ash worked hard to bring striker Brodie Ash into the game. However, the tall Belper defenders were quick to close down the Ironmen's attack.
The only goal of the game came at a bizarre moment when luck turned against Stanton. A lofted ball into defence from Belper seemed to drop very suddenly, somehow dropping behind the defender and in front of the goalkeeper, requiring just a simple tap-in to win the game.
Stanton tried hard to win back a goal, with Ronan Woodward coming on to replace Godsall in defence, so releasing Godsall as an additional striker.
With Woodward playing well and Godsall starting to turn the Belper defence, the referee blew for full-time.
