Ilkeston FC boss Paul Holland was pleased to see his side round off pre-season with a win on Saturday - but expects more new faces to be added to the Robins squad this week.
A 1-0 win over Belper Town was secured thanks to Liam Hearn’s early goal to put Ilkeston in good spirits ahead of the season opener with Stafford Rangers next weekend. You can read a report from the Belper game HERE
And having gone through a long pre-season schedule, Holland is now more than ready to get going.
He said: “It wasn’t the greatest of games but a win is a win whether it’s a friendly or not and it puts us in good stead for next week.
“There are still lots of things we need to look at and although I’ve got a good idea in my head of who will play against Stafford, a few new faces may still be needed.
“I’m still keen to bring in Anton Brown and continue to work hard to make that happen, but there are other irons in the fire that may come good too so we’ll see how the week goes.”
Holland was pleased to see his side earn another clean sheet, something which has been a common factor across the summer matches.
He said: “We’ve worked hard on defensive issues. At the end of last year we had such a young team that defensive errors and the number of goals conceded proved to be a big problem.
“It’s been about stripping things down and getting the basics right, as well as teaching them the nasty side of the game too as sometimes you need that.
“They’ve taken it on board and are doing what we’ve asked. Whilst we could still be better with the ball offensively, we still have a strong base I feel we can build on.”
