A teenage ice hockey player has been rewarded with a £1,500 sponsorship from a local retail store.

Jordan Kelsall, 14, will use the sponsorship from the Wilkinson, or ‘Wilko’, store on Bath Street, Ilkeston, to fund his two-year stay at Okanagan Ice Hockey Academy in Swindon, the only specialised ice hockey training school in the UK.

The donation was made as part of the store’s Local Star initiative, which sponsors individuals from across the country who either have a special talent, are an inspiration to others or help in their local community.

Since joining the Academy, Jordan has become the leading scorer and is benefiting from the daily training schedule. He is now preparing to represent England in February and April this year, travelling to Sweden and Switzerland for international hockey tournaments.

Melanie Usher, Wilko assistant store manager, said: “It’s always really inspiring to hear about the amazing talent we have in Ilkeston and the Local Stars fund is our way of helping them on their journey, whether it’s volunteer work, sporting activities or nurturing their skills.

“Jordan is a fantastic representative for our town and we hope the sponsorship money goes a long way in funding his training at the Academy.”

Jordan, of High Lane East, West Hallam, added: “I’m incredibly grateful for the sponsorship from my local Wilko store and every penny will make a difference when it comes to improving in my sport.

“My family and friends are always so supportive but it’s comforting to know I’ve got the backing of a local business as well. I only hope I can do Ilkeston and my country proud in Sweden and Switzerland this year.”
