Chesney Hughes and Hamish Rutherford batted Derbyshire towards safety on the final morning of the Specsavers County Championship match with Gloucestershire at the Brightside Ground, Bristol.

Hopes of a home win were briefly raised when opener Ben Slater was unluckily run out for six as his side looked to bridge a 119-run deficit on first innings.

Liam Norwell’s full length delivery was driven straight by Hughes and the bowler got the slightest of touches to deflect the ball onto the stumps at the bowler’s end with Slater out of his ground.

Gloucestershire were unable to capitalise on a pitch offering little assistance to seam or spin and by lunch Hughes (59 not out) and Rutherford (37 not out) had taken the score to 105-1 off 31 overs, with few alarms.

Hughes’ second half-century of the match was reached off 75 balls, with 10 fours.
