Ollie Robinson, bowling off spin for the first time this season instead of his usual seam, had Billy Godleman caught behind after the Derbyshire captain had made 49 as Derbyshire reached 97 for 4.

Godleman had added 44 for the first wicket with Chesney Hughes before Sussex struck twice in successive overs. Robinson went round the wicket to pin Hughes lbw for 11 and Steve Magoffin has Hamish Rutherford (1) well held to his right by the diving Chris Nash at second slip.

Godleman and Wayne Madsen took the score to 79 before Stuart Whittingham trapped Madsen with a full-length ball for 23. At tea, Derbyshire still needed 200 runs to make Sussex bat again.
