MATCH PREVIEW: Ilkeston FC v Salford City

Ilkeston FC will welcome a side perhaps better known for their owners than their footballing exploits to the New Manor Ground this weekend.

Salford City, currently chasing promotion from the Evo-Stik Premier Division, have progressed at pace after being taken over by former Manchester United stars Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Gary and Phil Neville.

Promotion fron Division One North soon followed and in their first season at Premier Division level has seen them rise to fourth place after 30 games and well in contention for a play-off place.

This season they have also drawn plenty of attention from a fine FA Cup run that saw them beat Notts County in the first round proper in front of the BBC television cameras and then two more live TV appearances followed as they took Hartlepool United to a replay in round two, eventually losing after extra time.

Their most recent league game was last weekend and a crucial clash against fellow promotion hopefuls Darlington, but having led 2-0 and 3-1 they were beaten 4-3 thanks to a goal three minutes from time.

It is Salford’s away form which has been their most impressive aspect of the campaign, with City having won 11 of their 14 games on the road so far, an ominous sign for an Ilkeston team without a home league win since December 5.
