One of Ilkeston’s most enduring sports clubs is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Ilkeston Basketball was formed back in September 1966, almost entirely from 14-year-old pupils at the Blessed John Houghton Roman Catholic School in Kirk Hallam, plus a couple more experienced players. And the club is still going strong today, running numerous teams of all ages and abilities, mainly under the Ilkeston Outlaws banner. To celebrate the half-century, a weekend of special events is planned for September 10 and 11, including celebratory matches and a pig roast at the Seven Oaks in Stanton by Dale.
The club was originally created and managed by Paul Booth, a teacher at John Houghton School, and hundreds of Ilkeston people, male and female, have been involved over the years. Some of them are still playing or coaching basketball.
