Ilkeston students celebrated their achievements when the Midlands PKA Kickboxing classes in the town held their annual presentation night.

The student of the year trophies were presented in three categories, juniors (under-14s), mixed ages and dragons (four-to-eight-year-olds), and for the first time, medals were also presented to the youngsters who finished a close second. This was because of the exceptional standard and efforts of all the kickboxers.

“Making the choice for student of the year was so tough this year, so we thought we would award runners-up prizes too,” said Jo Jones, an instructor at the classes, which are held at the Saint John Houghton Academy on Abbot Road, Kirk Hallam.

In the juniors category, the winner was Sydnee White, with the runners-up Ellis Lawton, Tom Shaw and Alicia Peck.

In the mixed cetegory, the winner was Jade Shaw, with the runners-up Lewis Bainbridge and Paul Turner.

And for the dragons, the winner was Denny Smedley, with the runner-up Isabella Jones.

Midlands PKA Kickboxing also hold classes at Eastwood, West Hallam and Borrowash. But their Ilkeston club is the longest running. Instructors Jo and Lee Jones are helped by assistant Amie Thacker and coaching team member Sam Colson. Free trials are available at all of their classes.
