Ilkeston Outlaws U16 63

Nottingham Nova 97

OUTLAWS U16 boys basketball team hosted league leaders Nottingham Nova on Saturday, and started the game well.

They kept pace with the visitors and, playing their man-to-man defence, made it hard work for Nova to penetrate the Ilkeston defence.

Outlaws had gained in confidence from their winning weekend a week earlier, and baskets from James Wood (7), Jordon Briggs (4), Danny Walters (2) and Rory Beresford (2) saw them end the first period only 17-21 down.

Outlaws were keeping in touch with their fast break basketball and with baskets from James Gothridge and Louis Sharpe, at half-time Outlaws were only down by 13, 27-40.

The third period started badly for Outlaws, Nova going on a 10-0 run in the first three minutes, but a time-out got Outlaws back into the game and with further baskets from Briggs and Turner, Outlaws ended the quarter with seven unanswered points of their own, 45-60 at the end of the third.

The last period saw Ilkeston fading from the relentless pressure Nova put into their fast break, and this was the only quarter where Outlaws’ tireness told.

By the time Briggs got his fifth foul the game was beyond reach, but it had been a good performance against the team that are likely to win the league.

Coaches and players made James Wood man-of-the -match.
