Rutland are routed by sumptuous Sandiacre
Sandiacre closed the Premier League title gap on leaders Ockbrook to a modest 26 points on Saturday after a comprehensive win against local rivals Ilkeston Rutland.
A closely fought game turned into a 118-run rout when Rutland collapsed spectacularly losing their last seven wickets for just 15 runs.
Sandiacre, the visitors, had chosen to bat first but soon found themselves in trouble when their top three had all departed for just 37 runs.
All three wickets were taken by the fiery Carl Pengelly who hit the deck hard and drew his rewards in a fine opening spell.
The innings was stabilised by David Jordison (32) and Rob Attwood (56) who put on 81 for the fourth wicket at a rate of four runs per over. Both fell to Pengelly’s second spell giving him a five wicket haul – the first by any Rutland first teamer this season.
With ten overs remaining, Sandiacre’s score was 141 for 5 but their lower order cashed in with a vengeance. Dan Wheeldon, a centurion the week before, hit 25 from 18 balls and Ryan McFadyean hammered an unbeaten 27 from 16 balls.
David Smit sustained the worst treatment and Martin Brandrick, who also bowled during the last ten over rush, escaped relatively unscathed ending with 3 for 51 from ten overs.
It was a decent performance in the field by Rutland with their wicket-keeper Andy Hislop in outstanding form. He took a stumping and four catches, one of which was a remarkable diving effort down the leg side.
Rutland needed 225 from their 50 overs to win and captain Smit began in belligerent fashion by hitting McFadyean for two boundaries in the first over.
But he was bowled by Wheeldon in the very next over and McFadyean then removed Martin Brandrick and Ian Banks in quick succession.
At 18 for 3 the innings desperately needed a long partnership and opener Nick Dawson and Andy Flindall set about doing just that.
They had taken the score along to 91 when Flindall, who had made 32, was given a dubious decision - adjudged caught off the spin of John Trueman.
The collapse that followed would have caused an English team in the Caribbean to blush.
John Jordison, who had bowled seven wicket-less overs for 27, suddenly hit a gold rush and bagged five victims from 13 deliveries including Rutland’s best batsman on the day Nick Dawson for 46.
Rutland had sunk without trace and must now set about rescuing their season against fellow Premier League strugglers Aston on Saturday.
Sandiacre took the 27 points and will hope they can continue to reel in leaders Ockbrook who could only manage 18 points from a winning draw against Alfreton.
Ilkeston’s sorry start to the season continued on Sunday when they exited the Derbyshire Cup at the group stages.
The team needed to beat Alfreton and hope other results went their way but went down to a three wicket defeat after failing to set a challenging enough target.
Despite the early loss of David Smit, Rutland were given a decent start with Nick Dawson hitting four boundaries in the first four overs.
Unfortunately he was then bowled for 19, one of six batsmen who made it to double figures only to be dismissed for less than 20.
Only teenager Tom Brandrick went on to a sizeable score – 53 and the constant drip of wickets meant the scoring rate never accelerated.
With 18 overs remaining, Rutland were 133 for 4 and seemingly poised to post a total in excess of 200. But helped by three run-outs Alfreton were able to dismiss their visitors for 182 with four of their 50 overs still to be bowled.
Alfreton could afford to pace their reply but in the event openers Tom Bentley and Jake Simpson gave them a flier in the context of the game. They put on 102 for the first wicket in 20 overs with both men reaching half-centuries.
Rutland struck back gamely taking six wickets for 29 runs with Martin Brandrick taking 3 for 29 and Ian Banks 2 for 28 from their 10 over spells.
It was not enough and wicket-keeper Graeme Bush saw Alfreton home with an unbeaten 34.
His opposite number Andy Hislop capped a wonderful weekend behind the timbers with three more catches and a stumping. It meant he had played a part in nine of the 17 wickets Rutland took over the weekend.
Rutland’s 2nd XI may be on something of a roll after recording their second successive win on Saturday.
They destroyed Little Eaton’s 1st XI in Division 4 North thanks to a magnificent opening spell by Chris Trumeman Jnr who claimed 5 for 4 from his first four overs.
Rutland, who had been put in to bat, got off to a great start after the early loss of stand-in skipper Damian Jones.
Tom Brandrick (68) and Luke Marriott (31) put on 110 for the second wicket and although they suffered a mini middle order collapse, ended on 205 for 8 with Chris Palfreyman making 36 and Ross Slater an unbeaten 22.
After tea, Little Eaton were simply blown away by Trueman. After seven overs they were 8 for 6 and the 18-year-old had completed what must be one of the fastest five-fors of the season.
Little Eaton's lower order saved them from the record books but they were eventually all out for 90.
Rutland’s 3rd XI got back to winning ways, easily taking out their promotion rivals Morton Colliery by ten wickets at Gallows Inn.
A good display in the field restricted Morton to 144 all out from their 46 overs with all the bowlers performing well. Chris Owen knocked over the first three batsmen to end for 3 for 36 and Under 15 spinner Tom Bobeszko took 3 for 43.
Rutland’s batting has been frail of late but openers Alan Chambers (63) and Luke White (67) did not allow it to be tested this week, knocking off the runs without loss.
White, whose athletic fielding has seen him called up by the 1st XI at times this year, rounded off a good all round display having already taken three catches as wicket-keeper.
