Sandiacre open up with a winning draw

SANDIACRE Town opened their Derbyshire Premier League season with a winning draw at Dunstall on Saturday - but it was a close run thing.

Batting first, the visitors reached 187 all out with Rob Attwood reaching 50 before being caught by Steven Scrimshaw off the bowling of John Hennings.

Anthony Woolley also scored well on 39 before he too was a victim of John Jennings, caught by Carl Eyden.

It was Craig Jennings though who was Dunstall’s best bowler as he took 4-49.

In reply, Sandiacre initially struggled and the game seemed to be heading for a home win.

But up stepped new signing Dan Wheeldon, whose two wickets in two balls inspired the visitors and the innings ended with Dunstall just two short of victory.

There were also two wickets apiece for John Jordison, Kevin Newbold and James Chapman.

James Benstead’s 33 was the best knock the hosts could muster, Jordison claiming his scalp lbw.

Wheeldon and Chapman achieved their figures in just 6.2 and six overs respectively.

Sandiacre took 15 points to Dunstall’s 12.

Elsewhere, Sandiacre’s second XI got off to a winning start in Division Three as they comfortably overcame visitors Heanor Town by 167 runs.

David Jordison was the main man with the bat as the hosts raced to 258-7 from their 46 overs, as he scored 89 before being out lbw off the bowling of Drew Fenn.

James Riley also scored well with 46 and opener Matt Boyer hit a useful 34. Fenn was Heanor’s top bowler with 3-42.

The Sandiacre bowlers took little time in wiping out their opposition, at one point having reduced them to 17-5.

Andrew Marlow was the key man as he took a five-wicket haul for the loss of just 24 runs, Paul Standing taking 3-20 and one wicket each for Simon Base and Ashley Brown.

The third XI also tasted victory as they beat Belper Meadows by seven wickets.

Belper scored 151 with James Dean and John Woolley doing most of the damage with three wickets each. Belper’s top scorer was Tom Milner on 22.

In reply, Neil MacNamee took the bull by the horns as he finished unbeaten on 73 - Sandiacre only losing three wickets on their way to a comfortable win, using up 33.3 overs to do it.
