Shipley Hall miss out after a cup thriller

SHIPLEY Hall came agonisingly close to claiming a place in the Derbyshire final of the Village Cricket Competition on Sunday but went down by one run to visitors Holmesfield.

Holmesfield won the toss and batted first. Graham Farnsworth grabbed an early wicket and the Shipley bowlers kept a tight grip on the Holmesfield batsmen so that after 25 overs the score was only 57-2.

After 30 overs, it was 94-3 and Shipley looked to be in a strong position. It was in the last ten overs that Holmesfield scored 88 to boost their total to 182-6.

Graham Farnsworth bowled well for his 2-25 and Danny Hanson took 3-29.

When Shipley batted, they knew 183 was a target they could reach. Mark Starr and David Robinson gave their side a sound start, adding 67 for the first wicket and when Shipley reached the 30-over stage, they were 127-2.

Starr had batted superbly for 68 and, with Hanson (15), Ryan North (37) and Matt Hardwick (21 not out), Shipley were favourites to win.

But when four runs were required off the last ball, only two were scored and Shipley lost by one run.

- On Saturday, Shipley Hall were in Derbyshire County League Division One action and contested a drawn game with visitors Aston-on-Trent.

For the fourth successive week, spectactors were treated to a feast of runscoring from both sides.

Aston won the toss, batted first and put on 41 for the first wicket. Runs started to come quickly with the pick of the batsmen proving to be Tariq Mohammad who plundered a brilliant 101, hitting six sixes and nine fours in a blistering attack on the bowling.

At the end of the 50 overs, Aston had accumulated a massive 314-8. Ryan North took 3-70.

Shipley replied by setting about the opposition's bowling with considerable vigour.

Stef Gamble (38), skipper James Cokayne (83) and Ryan North (24) took the score along at a rapid rate.

After 40 overs, Shipley had reached 231-4 but lost their way in the final few overs as they went for a big win.

By the 46th over, nine wickets were down leaving Martin and Thomas Starr to salvage a draw, playing sensibly to end on 265-9.

Shipley took 12 points from the game and Aston 18.
