Shipley record a comfortable win
SHIPLEY Hall eased to a convincing win against struggling Darley Dale on Saturday.
They lost only three wickets in passing the total of 142 for 9 scored by the home team and earned themselves a useful 22 points which lifted them into the top half of the table.
Darley Dale batted first and struggled against the bowling of David Farnsworth, Dan Hanson and Danny Haddon on a wicket which gave the bowlers considerable help.
Farnsworth had a particularly impressive of bowling taking 3 for 15 off his 14 overs, a miserly average, and he was well supported by Hanson (3 for 48) and Haddon (3 for 41)
The opening batsman for Darley Dale, Craig Elliott, had an excellent innings, 51 not out, carrying his bat throughout in an impressive performance.
D Jones, batting at number nine, then hit a lusty 31 in the last few overs when his side were 78 for 7. He retired hurt when a ball edged from his bat and hit his face but his sound effort had taken his side’s total to 142, more than seemed likely at one stage of the game.
When Shipley batted they lost Stef Gamble lbw for one, but an agressive stand of 62 in 12 overs by captain Mark Starr (35) and Wes Essex (34) saw Shipley take the initiative.
The Darley bowling became very sloppy and they conceded a total of 43 extras including 28 wides - a very poor performance.
Neil Cox (14 not out) and Hanson (16 not out) saw Shipley to victory. With the scores level after 33 overs, two more wides saw the win confirmed.
l SHIPLEY Hall are the first winners of the inaugural Heanor Festival Trophy.
On a beautiful summer evening at Shipley last Thursday, the hosts emerged victorious from a highly entertaining and sporting contest against Heanor Town.
Shipley won the toss and batted first, posting 164 from their 16 allotted eight-ball overs.
The early batsmen were intent on going for quick runs, but whilst they achieved their desired effect, they also lost wickets in the process and at 40 for 4 off five overs, Heanor had the edge.
However, Shipley’s Dale O’Keefe hit a bold, quick 27 and when young David Farnsworth added a brilliant knock of 62 including four sixes and six fours, Shipley’s total was boosted to 164-8.
His partner John Leeming gave him very good support.
Andy Mann was the pick of the Heanor bowlers with a very good effort producing figures of 3-30.
In reply, Heanor lost two quick wickets with 24 on the board, but there was a scintillating innings by Alistair Dixon of 73 including ten fours and a six and while he was at the crease it looked as though Heanor could win the match.
However, Ryan North bowled him and despite a spirited innings from Chris Green who scored 20, Heanor could only muster 131, falling 33 runs short.
It is hoped this fixture will become an annual event with next year’s taking place at Heanor.
The trophy was presented to Shipley captain John Hunt by Councillor Bob Janes, Mayor of Heanor and Loscoe.
