Stanton Tennis Club all set for large overhaul thanks to LTA grant

Stanton Tennis Club have been given the go-ahead to improve their facilities.

The Ilkeston club have been given the green light on plans to reconstruct four macadam courts at the Rutland Sports Park site.

The improvements will be made thanks to a grant from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) totalling £63,083, with support from Sport England, with the club contributing the remaining £21,027 towards the cost of the development.

Club member and project manager Mark Hancock said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to bring a wonderful facility back to the town and to get more people taking part.

“Our vision has always been to provide opportunities for the whole community to get involved in sport and with the backing of the LTA we now have the chance to realise what we have been working towards for such a long time.

“Both the LTA and Erewash Borough Council have been incredibly supportive and we are looking forward to working with them in the coming months to make it a great success.”

Work is due to start on the courts in the next two months with the aim of being fit for use at the start of April.

Paul Sheard, LTA tennis development manager for Derbyshire and Leicestershire, added: “We are delighted that we have finally got the go ahead to renovate the outdoor courts at Rutland Sports Park.

“We recognised a number of years ago the huge potential that exists at the site with the indoor tennis centre but we needed to bring the outdoor courts back to good condition and make it a flourishing overall venue.”

The funding has been provided as part of British Tennis’s facilities strategy which has received substantial investment from Sport England.

This makes an important contribution to the drive to increase tennis opportunities for people to participate, compete and get access to coaching at all levels of the game in communities nationwide.

Richard Lewis, Sport England’s chairman, said: “It’s vital that public funding for sport goes into facilities that meet the highest standards, are welcoming, and cater for everyone. That’s how we’re going to get more people using them every day.

“The new facilities at Stanton Tennis Club will offer even more accessibility for its members and encourage more people from the local community to get involved in the sport.”

The LTA makes financial support available through its resources and ensures investments will deliver the maximum return for British tennis through more people playing and more hours on the court across Britain.

There will be an increase in the number and standard of facilities nationwide which will be available to the whole community at a reasonable, affordable cost.
