TWO goals in three second-half minutes sealed Ilkeston FC’s promotion to the Evo-Stik Premier Division in a lively play-off final on Saturday.
Matt Richards and Daryll Thomas struck on 70 and 72 minutes to seal victory over Leek Town and give the Robins promotion in their first ever season.
A crowd of 1,670 packed into the New Manor Ground to witness a game Ilkeston dominated but that they took a while to take by the scruff of its neck.
Richards opened the scoring when he placed a fine effort into the corner of the net after being set up by Gary Ricketts, who then supplied the ball which fed Thomas for the second, a powerful drive from just inside the box.
Manager Kevin Wilson said afterwards: “We were so disappointed last Saturday to lose at Grantham in the manner we did, but on Monday against Sheffield we put all that behind us in some style and today was the same.
“We made it difficult for ourselves in that we couldn’t make our possession count for a big portion of the game, but then we hit them twice in a couple of minutes and it was game over.
“It’s a fantastic achievement for the club in its first season and great credit has to go to the players, the chairman (Dave Mantle) who has made it all possible, and to the fans who have been unbelievable all year.”
