Long Eaton A Team swimmers travelled to Worcester for the first round of this year’s Arena League..
It was a tough night for the A Team who finished in fourth place, just two points behind third and 15 points behind second place.
A lot of swimmers were feeling the effect of the heavy training schedule in place at this time of the season and were off the pace of what they know they can do.
Added to this, due to last minute withdrawals some swimmers had to step up and compete in additional events.
Chief coach Spencer George said: “Every point had to be fought for but I’m still confident the team can make the final.”
The final scores were City of Derby 252, Hereford 165, Leamington Spa 154, Long Eaton 152, Worcester 151, Abington 148.
The B Team travelled the short distance to Hucknall where they finished a credible third.
Winners on the night in the Open Age group were Helen Gorman (200 metres individual medley and 100 metres breaststroke and butterfly), Helen Akers (100 metres freestyle) and Ryan Cendrowski (100 metres butterfly), and, swimming in the 11-year age group, Carmen Calland (50 metres backstroke and freestyle).
The Helens were joined by Bethany Dennis, Hannah Dowell, Laura Tooher-Hindle and Alex Brown to take the penultimate race, the six by 50 metres open freestyle relay.
Final scores at Hucknall were Dronfield Dolphins 174, Market Harborough 163, Long Eaton B 146, Radford 137, Boldmere C 121
Spencer George added: “I was especially pleased to see how well the B Team performed and that some swimmers’ performances meant they were applying pressure for an A Team place.
“Overall I felt it was a good start to the campaign.”
