Wilson signs three year deal

ROBINS' manager Kevin Wilson has put pen to paper and signed a new three-year contract.

The manager has been busy checking possible signings at "exit trials," matches organised to show the potential of 18-year-olds not retained after the end of academy courses.

Wilson has been at games organised by Football League clubs Wycombe, Bradford and Walsall as well as one run by Manchester Metropolitan University.

"A few have caught my eye. I know we are down the list because we know lads hope to be picked up by a league club but that's management," he said.

Wilson is busy trying to set up the educational part of an Ilkeston Town Academy, which should be launched before the new 2010-2011 season gets under way.

Teenagers will be able to study courses which could help them enter a range of sport-related jobs like managing leisure centres or becoming physiotherapists.

And he is keeping in touch with players from the existing senior squad, who have been given the chance to remain at the New Manor Ground and build on the progress made in his first season in charge.

He has several transfer targets in mind, publicly announcing that he wants more pace in the team.

So far he has signed 25-year-old Laurie Wilson from Hucknall Town.

Meanwhile owner Gary Hodder has said he is keen for backing from firms who outlined their interest when he negotiated a deal with Chek Whyte, whose son had a controlling stake until March.

"We're trying to stimulate interest in the town and get more people on board.

"That includes investors and supporters.

"We will have a new kit manufacturer and a new brewer and we want other people to come forward and have a good relationship with this club.

"Hopefully, there will be a lot of changes before the start of the season and people will appreciate the change. We want people to relish the start of a new era when everything will be fresh and we start with a clean slate."

He hopes potential backers will be impressed by the long-term planning, which involves the contract offer to Wilson, who guided the young squad to a healthy finishing spot in the Blue Square North.
