Wilson wants improvement after 'worst performance'
ILKESTON Town manager Kevin Wilson demanded a big improvement from his young side as they prepared for the visit of promotion chasers Droylsden on Saturday.
He was disappointed with the squad’s display in the 1-1 draw at strugglers Hyde United on Monday, when winger Sam Duncum picked up another injury.
In a training session tonight (Thursday), Wilson will be coaxing his players into regaining their early season form after the Hyde clash.
“That was probably one of our worst performances of the season. We simply didn’t do well enough. We have got to make the passes we do in training.
“We have got to make the right choices, take our chances and keep the ball better.
“I am not speaking of our commitment and attitude - that is accepted and is there,” said Wilson, who recently checked on the progress of Droylsden, Ilkeston’s opponents on the first day of the Blue Square North season.
“They are doing well as they always do in the Conference North. We have to get our game back against them,” said Wilson, who refused to blame recent postponements for the loss of form.
Duncum is having treatment after picking up an ankle strain on Monday. He started on the subs bench because he was accidentally kicked at Fleetwood and was then struck down by flu.
Amari Morgan-Smith also began the night as a substitute, after shaking off a chest infection which has blighted him in recent weeks.
He came on at half-time when Gary Ricketts was pulled out of the action after getting a yellow card.
Wilson feared his club captain might get a second booking and that would have led to another lengthy ban at a time when Ricketts’ influence and power are badly needed.
Loanees Matt Godden and Rory Coleman could make their home debuts after arriving from Scunthorpe United. They both featured at Fleetwood and Hyde, bringing hope the Robins might score more goals. Both hit the net freely in other spells with non-league sides.
Club officials are hoping for a healthy gate on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, to help the finances start to recover after being shorn of attractive fixtures over Christmas and the New Year when the winter weather took a bite out of the football programme.
Home fans have been without Saturday action at the New Manor Ground since the FA Trophy visit of Mossley on November 20. The last Saturday league encounter at home was the visit of Northwich Victoria on October 17.
