This weekend (January 12-13), 12 Territorial Army (TA) units from all over the Nottinghamshire will be taking over the Market Square in Nottingham city centre to put on a massive combined TA Open Weekend to demonstrate to the public what the TA is all about.
Infantrymen, medics, drivers, gunners, engineers, and signallers will come together to showcase what they do.
Each unit will be bringing a range of specialist equipment and supplies to put on demonstrations and educate the public about the role of the Territorial Army and its importance in the British Armed Forces.
Stands will include weapons displays, armoured vehicles, a mobile bridge called a Medium Girder Over Bridge (MGOB), assault boats, a Royal Artillery Light Gun, an air portable dozer and a lightweight tractor.
The event is part of an extensive recruitment campaign to encourage new recruits. The TA plays a key role maintaining the strength of the British Army. The TA allows people to serve in the Army in their spare time, combining full time studies or a career with the military.
The exciting and challenging training regime, often alongside regular soldiers, prepares them to be ready at short notice to serve alongside their Regular Army counterparts. TA soldiers are paid the same per day as their regular counterparts and if you complete the minimum training requirement, you receive a tax-free bonus.
Sergeant Craig Barker said: “This is going to be a fantastic weekend. It’s really important for the Territorial Army to showcase their skills, and to show the very varied roles that are available.
“If you want to find out what the TA is, and want to find out about the different jobs you can learn to do, then speak to the officers and soldiers who are there. They will be able to give you first-hand experience about what it’s like to be in the TA as well as the benefits that come with it.
“Many people interested in joining one of Nottinghamshire’s Territorial Army units may not be sure which is best suited to them. By bringing them all together in the same place at the same time, visitors will be able to chat with soldiers from a variety of disciplines and perhaps find the one that best suits their skills and interests.”
Members of the public are invited to the open weekend at Market Square, Nottingham, on Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm.
Recruiting remains one of the Army’s highest priorities and there are many roles available in the Nottingham area from infantry soldiers, medics, engineers, signallers, gunners, chefs and drivers. The TA offers a wide variety of careers for both soldiers and officers with over 200 different roles available.
